Should You Ever Feed a Glendale Baby Raccoon? How to Tell!

When you encountered an orphaned Glendale baby raccoon, the first thing you have to do is to try to reunite them with the mother raccoon. Their chance of survival will be a lot higher when they are with their mother. On the off chance that the female raccoon did not retrieve her infants, you should not feed the baby raccoon especially if you lack the knowledge and experience.

A Complete Guide on Feeding the Raccoon

The orphaned California baby raccoon has a high risk of suffering from dehydration and chills when the female raccoon is missing. The first step is to keep them warm. You may fill a bottle with warm water and wrap it in a towel. Replace it regularly to keep the baby warm. In case they appear to be starving, you should not carelessly give them milk formula. Rehydration solution would be a better option rather than the standard milk formula. Remember that not all animals have the ability to digest cow's milk.

Give them With Pedialyte

Instead of giving them with a milk formula, the Pedialyte that is designed for human infant should be administered. This solution can be purchased on your local drug store and it comes in a variety of flavors. If possible, you should choose the solution without any flavor since this is better for the baby raccoon. The solution should have the average body temperature before it should be given to the animal. In case the baby raccoon only has a capacity to drink small amount, give them with a Pedialyte for every 30 minutes, for the baby raccoons who are taking large amount of solution, 2 hours gap would be recommended. This solution should only be given until the raccoon has been rehydrated. You will know that they are rehydrated if they are producing a generous amount of yellow urine.

Feeding Tools that You Will Need

During the initial feeding, you can use a baby nipple that is pushed in a syringe with a 10cc capacity. Once this has been successfully established, you may now use a baby bottle designed for human. You should never use the nursing bottles that are offered at the pet stores. You will be responsible in controlling the flow of the liquid. If you choose the nursing bottle, you won't be able to achieve that. Syringe can be purchased at the local vet clinic. Ask them for a syringe with an O ring.

On the off chance that the baby nipple is too big for the baby California raccoon, the PetAG nursing kit would be an excellent replacement. In order to create an ideal hole, use a needle to pierce the nipple. Boil the nipple while the needle is still inserted. In case the hole is too small, you may use a toothpick to create a hole.

During an emergency situation, you can create a rehydration solution in your Glendale home by mixing 1/2tbsp sugar, 1/2tsp salt to 2cups water. Heat the mixture lightly until such time that the sugar and salt has been dissolved. You may use this solution temporarily as an alternative to Pedialyte.
